This organization is not immune from the similar plague as the other volunteer organization in the Greenstone. In fact I think the snowmobile club is one that has struggle with volunteer of the years more than anyone else. The pool of volunteers is draining, and there seems to be no hope to replenish. This is the reality we are face with. And the people who are still volunteering are being overworked and stretch to the limit. So it’s not a pretty picture. I believe there are people out there that just need a little push to get on board. I would like to know what are the general duties/ job description, of helping out snow club. What are your criteria’s of being a trail groomer operator. There are a few people I would like to approach, that I think would be of some help, but I’d like to know more before approaching them.

First, thanks for your interest in trying to recruit new volunteers to help the now worn out ones that are still hanging in there. General duties would encompass mainly trail maintenance e.g. brushing, clearing wind falls off the trail system, erecting signage, removing out dated signage and generally enhancing the trail passageways. You may be asked to travel out of town should there be training offered in the district. It would be nice to have warm up shacks erected along the trails at various location. These would have to be portable in the sense that a permanent structure cannot be erected and as such would have to be dismantled after each season. For the brushwork and felling we require chain saw certified people as per Health & Safety Policies. We require people that are mechanically inclined with experience in diesel mechanics, welding, gas engines and hydraulics (hydro static drives) as there are times that repairs need to be done out in the field should a groomer go down as well as regularly scheduled maintenance. We require Groomer Operators and the criteria for this job is that you are required to put in as many hours as necessary as a trainee and when the trainer says you are ready then and only then will you be able to run on your own. You would be on the trail for long hours at a time and good mechanical abilities are required. This is a demanding task and is not for everyone, although everyone it seems wants to be the groomer operator. We require trail wardens that would patrol the trails ensuring that each and every trail rider has a valid OFSC Trail permit. We require people willing to spearhead snowmobile events that will help promote snowmobiling in our communities. We need fund raisers to help raise monies to keep the trails groomed and up to a high standard. The number of permits sold out of our club will not keep the groomer running all winter, our fuel subsidy will most likely take a hit this winter and should we have poor permit sales we will need to raise funds to get the required fuel. We recently held our AGM it was advertised in the local TS for 2 consecutive weeks. Guess who showed up, the worn out volunteers :) But on a better note we did manage to have 2 people contact us within the last week putting their names forward to help out where they can and we thank them for doing so. We will be putting them to good use this weekend to help with signage. We will not turn any one away who is willing to assist. Dependant on their skill set will determine where we can best use that individual. Our club is unique from most, as we do not shut down when the snow leaves. We have the Adult Walleye Classic as well as the Junior Classic each year and both these events require a volunteer pool. So in short there are many aspects of the Kenogamisis Club that can use all the help we can get for both summer and winter activities. All volunteers are welcome and I am sure we will find something for you to do. Simply call me if I’m not in leave a message 807-854-1076 or attend one of our monthly meetings. I will post the date here on this website once a date has been confirmed. We meet in the Legion basement during the winter months.

Thanks for your responses.
I'll do what I can to help with the recruiting.
Well today was an extremely productive day. All signage is up as far as Jellicoe with Brian Davis and Jason Gignac hammering in sign posts at that end. While Elgin myself and our new volunteer Andrew Seaton were erecting signage on 2 pipeline crossings towards Beardmore, leaving 4 more crossings (40 signs) to erect then the signage to Beardmore will be completed.
Bubbles and Dave the Groomer Docs had tackled the changing of 2 track sets on the groomer. They had changed 1 set of tracks and were working on the second set when the signage crew arrived After a bit of a struggle the second set was on. The groomer is now ready to go just waiting for the snows to come.
These are the volunteers that keep this Snow Club moving forward.
Thanks to you all for a hard days work.
Keep up the good work!
Hopefully there will be plently of snow at Christmas as I will be hauling my Snowmobile up that way.
I will be keeping my fingures crossed until then!!!
